Join expedition cruise pioneers Heritage Expeditions on an unforgettable 15-day exploration of Svalbard, Greenland and Iceland on the ultimate High Arctic expedition cruise. To voyage around these island jewels is to experience some of the Arctic's most dramatic landscapes, home to an astounding diversity of wildlife. This 15-day Svalbard Greenland Iceland cruise ranks among the best Arctic cruises available.

Your adventure begins with a night in Paris, France, before flying to Longyearbyen, Norway, the world's northernmost town and capital of Svalbard, nestled in a deep valley on the shores of the idyllic Adventfjord and surrounded by steep mountains and glaciers. From here we set out to explore Svalbard, a wilderness archipelago full of astonishing sights, stunning scenery, wonderful nature and a fascinating human history. This collection of large islands, just a few hundred kilometres from the North Pole, is blanketed in snow and ice for much of the year, but during the brief summer, when we'll be visiting, they burst into life.

Millions of birds use their sea cliffs to breed, and Humpback, Blue and Sperm Whales travel here to feed on the ocean's abundance. Large groups of Walrus haul out on the beaches, and Polar Bears hunt on both land and pack ice. Arctic Fox and Reindeer search for food across the polar tundra, which briefly blooms with a colourful carpet of mosses, lichen and masses of tiny flowers.

Being well above the Arctic Circle, under the Midnight Sun, allows for long days of exploration and increases our opportunities for adventure, whenever they arise. A much-loved and true Svalbard cruise highlight for everyone. Even in high summer the ice never completely loses its grip, giving the landscape a primeval, starkly beautiful character.

If we are lucky, we may see huge glaciers calving into spectacular fjords, creating stunning ice cathedrals. As the sea ice begins to break up, it creates a maze of sparkling ice floes, resting places for Ringed and Bearded Seals, as well as a hunting ground for their main predator, the Polar Bear. The eastern and western sides of Svalbard display very different characters, and we plan to explore both.

The west, bathed in the warm waters of the Gulf Stream, makes for a slightly warmer climate and less sea ice, while on the cooler northern and eastern shores, winter's icy grip seems to cling on for much of the year. From Svalbard, we sail to Greenland, the world's largest island, and into the heart of the world's largest fjord system, Scoresby Sund, on the east coast. Cutting deep into the interior, like roots on a tree, allows us to explore this magnificent Arctic wilderness at close range and be dwarfed by nature.

The giant ice cap covering 80% of Greenland spills from the mountains feeding enormous glaciers, which calve into Scoresby Sund as massive icebergs, some as high as Big Ben or the Statue of Liberty. In summer large areas of ice-free shores reveal fields of tundra home to a diversity of Arctic wildlife, from massive Ice Age survivors Musk Oxen to tiny Lemmings. The sheltered waters of the fjords also harbour whales and seals, and the birdlife is prolific.

The rich wildlife, twisting channels and ever-changing vistas create a unique and stunningly beautiful Arctic oasis to explore. A highlight of any Greenland cruises itinerary, and especially memorable for those seeking a Scoresby Sund Greenland cruise. Our final destination is the rugged northwest shore of Iceland, where we will arrive at the small town of Ísafjörður in the Westfjords.

Located on a dramatic sand spit, surrounded by sea and stunning mountains, with quaint old timber houses built by fishing merchants in the 18th and 19th Centuries, it has a very special Icelandic character. We visit the breathtakingly beautiful Dynjandi Waterfall, cascading down in a veil over a series of rocky ledges, as well as the Kirkjufellsfoss Waterfall, famously set against the iconic pyramidal Kirkjufell Mountain, one of Iceland's most photogenic locations. We also plan to explore the old-world charm of the remote island of Flatey.

Here, brightly coloured houses join a traditional rural landscape, a haven for nesting seabirds, to give the island a wonderfully tranquil feel. In true expedition style, our travels around all these islands will be dictated by weather and wildlife, with our experienced expedition team making the best of every opportunity. Whether exploring by ship, cruising in Zodiacs, or landing at remote beaches or quaint harbours for adventures on foot, this will allow us to get up close to the natural wonders and fascinating human cultures of these remarkable Arctic islands.

A true Luxury Arctic cruise experience from start to finish. This voyage includes the option to join sea kayaking excursions with an expert guide

Arrive at Paris, France's effortlessly cool capital where haute couture meets a world-famous café culture, renowned art galleries, avant-garde gastronomy and iconic symbol of modernity, the Eiffel Tower. Make your way to your hotel, where you will spend the first night of the expedition. This evening, meet your fellow voyagers and some of our expedition guides over dinner at the hotel.

Longyearbyen is the biggest settlement in Svalbard. Seat of the Norwegian administration, it also has the best services and infrastructure in the archipelago. Located deep in the Adventfjord, a sidearm of the Isfjorden (Icefjord), Longyearbyen’s airport can be used all-year round, but its harbor is blocked by ice in winter. Most shops, hotels, restaurants and a hospital are within easy walking distance of the port. One of the most prominent buildings in town is the UNIS center, where several Norwegian universities have joined forces to operate and offer the northernmost higher education to both Norwegian and international students. Adjacent to UNIS, and well worth a visit, is the Svalbard Museum, covering the natural history and exploitation of Svalbard. Remnants of the former mining activity can be seen all around Longyearbyen and even in town.

A flexible itinerary allows us to take advantage of favorable ice and weather conditions to travel through the northern stretches of Svalbard to points visited by famous polar explorers such as Andrée, Amundsen and Nobile. Destinations might include the narrow waterways and striking mountains of Krossfjord and Raudfjord. The ship may visit the historic settings of Ny Alesund, Ny London or Amsterdamoya. And of course, we hope to see distinctly Arctic wildlife from walrus hauled out in noisy groups on remote shorelines, to reindeer grazing alpine slopes, and from ptarmigan in their camouflaged hiding places, to mighty polar bears striding the shores in search of their next meal.

Welcome to Greenland! This is where the true East Greenland expedition cruise experience begins. East Greenland is among the Arctic's most spectacular scenery, and we will enjoy the very best of it over the next three days exploring the largest fjord system on Earth - Scoresby Sund. This vast wilderness covers some 38,000 square kilometres (almost the size of Switzerland), branching into a maze of different arms and channels, the longest of which stretches inland some 350 kilometres from the sea. Explorations here are a true immersion as you appreciate the scale of one of the world's wildest places. Here snow-capped peaks and towering cliffs meet supersized tidewater glaciers calving apartment building-sized icebergs, which create a stunning sight framed by the majestic walls of the fjords. We will expedition cruise by these floating sculptures of ice by ship as well as more intimate explorations by Zodiac, giving an up-close appreciation of their overwhelming grandeur from sea level.

Two colossal terraces of sheer rock stand either side of this extraordinarily located town - which rides a jutting spit onto an immensity of black fjord water. Surprisingly, considering the remoteness of its location and its compact size, Isafjordur is a modern and lively place to visit, offering a great choice of cafes and delicious restaurants – which are well stocked to impress visitors. The town is a perfectly located base for adventures amongst Iceland's fantastic wilderness - with skiing, hiking and water-sports popular pursuits among visitors.

Our second day in Iceland sees us greeted by the glacier-carved terrain of Iceland's Snæfellsnes Peninsula, highlighted by the sparkling waterfalls of Drangajökull Glacier, Iceland's northernmost glacier. This morning enjoy exploring the many charms of fishing village Grundarfjörður, surrounded by spectacular mountains, including the town's landmark Mount Kirkjufell, which stands separate to the main mountain range. A sanctuary for the White-tailed Eagle, the largest predatory bird in Iceland. Options include exploring the Langjökull Glacier ice cap on Mount Kirkjufell, or a deep dive into local culture and history with a visit to a traditional farm. Try the local delicacy, fermented Icelandic Shark and encounter Iceland's famous Icelandic Horses, one of the world's oldest and purest horse breeds. This afternoon, explore the old-world charm of the remote island of Flatey, the only inhabited island of the 3,000 small islets studding Breiðafjörður Bay. Here, step back in time among the ancestral houses of this 19th century Icelandic village and discover the world's smallest library, which famously houses the Book of Flatey, one of Iceland's ancient Saga manuscripts. Penned by monks living in the island's former monastery, deemed a centre of knowledge when it was built in 1172 AD on the island's highest point. Visit Grýluvogur beach where colourful boats are anchored. The church's ceiling mural is worth a visit, as is the mural above the altar depicting Jesus wearing a traditional Icelandic woollen jersey. For naturalists, the towering volcanic cliffs attract 50 species of breeding birds, while more than 230 species of vascular plants can be found here.

Sprawling Reykjavík, the nation's nerve center and government seat, is home to half the island's population. On a bay overlooked by proud Mt. Esja (pronounced eh-shyuh), with its ever-changing hues, Reykjavík presents a colorful sight, its concrete houses painted in light colors and topped by vibrant red, blue, and green roofs. In contrast to the almost treeless countryside, Reykjavík has many tall, native birches, rowans, and willows, as well as imported aspen, pines, and spruces.Reykjavík's name comes from the Icelandic words for smoke, reykur, and bay, vík. In AD 874, Norseman Ingólfur Arnarson saw Iceland rising out of the misty sea and came ashore at a bay eerily shrouded with plumes of steam from nearby hot springs. Today most of the houses in Reykjavík are heated by near-boiling water from the hot springs. Natural heating avoids air pollution; there's no smoke around. You may notice, however, that the hot water brings a slight sulfur smell to the bathroom.Prices are easily on a par with other major European cities. A practical option is to purchase a Reykjavík City Card at the Tourist Information Center or at the Reykjavík Youth Hostel. This card permits unlimited bus usage and admission to any of the city's seven pools, the Family Park and Zoo, and city museums. The cards are valid for one (ISK 3,300), two (ISK 4,400), or three days (ISK 4,900), and they pay for themselves after three or four uses a day. Even lacking the City Card, paying admission (ISK 500, or ISK 250 for seniors and people with disabilities) to one of the city art museums (Hafnarhús, Kjarvalsstaðir, or Ásmundarsafn) gets you free same-day admission to the other two.
